Map: ALTERNATIVE INCA TRAIL -SALKANTAY – MACHU PICCHU ( 5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS )

 SUMMARY
This is a remote and ancient footpath in the same region of the Inca trail, but less traveled and with more spectacular views. A magnificent and rugged alternative for those who wish to escape the more congested trekking routes, for those who like a physical challenge or perhaps if you are just looking for an alternative if the traditional Inca Trail has no spaces available.

ITINERARY
Day 01
You will leave Cusco and pass by the villages of Izcuchaca and Limatambo before arriving at Mollepata at approximately 9am. Here you will share breakfast with your guide to prepare you for your long first day´s walk. Lunch will be served at Silca Field, giving you just enough time to prepare for your three-hour walk before we arrive at our first campsite Soraypampa.

Day 02
After a good breakfast you can prepare yourselves to undertake the longest and most difficult trek of the trip. Leaving at around 7am you will cross the Salkantay Pampas, following the left side of the snow topped Umantay, which sits subserviently next to the glaciered majesty of Salkantay. By midday you will be at the high point, still looking up at Salkantay from about 4500 meters. From here you can admire the iconic slopes of the sacred mountain and get a close enough view of its snow avalanches! After another hour, lunch will come as a pleasant necessity. Two hours further on you will arrive at Huayrac, where you will spend your second night´s camping.

Day 03
This day will be unforgettable because of the great variety of flora and fauna you will experience on the trek. Starting off at Huayrac, you will pass through the Arranniyuc community and continue descending towards the forest, where you will appreciate the natural, thermal water formations which have formed in a small valley, following the course of the river Santa Teresa, where nature lovers will appreciate the diverse varieties of orchids and water falls, whose torrents cascade around you. Finally you will arrive at our campsite in Lluskamayu late in the afternoon, before enjoying dinner and spending the night there.

Day 04
After breakfast you will leave the base camp and follow the dirt trail all the way to Lucmabamba and the recently discovered Inca Trail leading to Llactapata, where you will have lunch. After a three hour trek you will be able to view the impressive citadel of Machu Picchu from an unusual angle and enjoy lunch with this stunning backdrop. You will descend to the hydro-electric train station by foot where the train will take you to Aguas Calientes, where you will stay overnight in a hotel, where dinner is provided.

Day 05
The bus will take you up to the glorious citadel, which for some is the pinnacle of the trip and here your guide will give you a broad explanation of the archaeological center for approximately two hours, before you will be released to explore the citadel on your own for as long as you want. Later you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, then the train back to Cusco. or Ollantaytambo and then the bus to Cusco

Important Note: We highly recommend that you book this trip at least three weeks in advance.
