DAY 01 - AREQUIPA
Transfer to your hotel after meeting up. The morning is free for you to explore the city, take a nap or visit a café. In the afternoon you will visit Santa Catalina convent, which was once home to some 400 nuns.
Arequipa, which was established in 1540 by Manuel de Carbajal, became known as the "White City ", for its temples, convents and palaces made from white ashlar. Despite being a stopover town for colonial shipments of silver from Potosi en route to Quilca and eventually to Spain, Peru´s second biggest city is easy on the eye. The colonial architecture of the historic centre, much of it in mestizo style, adds historical resonance, while its natural setting at the foot of the Misti volcano lends a majisterial backdrop. You will stay overnight at your hotel after dinner.
|
DAY 02 - AREQUIPA - CABANACONDE
Another free morning to visit Arequipa by yourself, then at lunchtime you will start your trip by public bus to Cabanaconde, a journey of around six hours. Arriving at Cabanaconde Village in the evening, you will stay overnight at the beautiful hotel " Kunturwassi ", in Cabanaconde.
|
DAY 03 - TREK DOWN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE COLCA CANYON
After breakfast, we will start our trek, which passes through small Peruvian pueblos.
After around three hours of walking we will arrive at San Juan de Cchucho for lunch. A respite for the legs will precede your afternoon walk up to the Coshñirhua and Malata villages, known for their friendly people, fruit trees and chacras (agricultural plots). Your arrival in "Sangalle Valley", a verdant paradise close to the majestic Colca River, should rival any natural setting you have set eyes upon for shear beauty. Here we will relax and cool off in pools before dusk, when you will make a campfire under a starry sky (the area is renown for its clear skies). We will sleep in a rustic cabin constructed from bamboo and other natural materials found in Colca Canyon.
|
DAY 04 - AREQUIPA
A hearty breakfast will precede your ascent back up to Cabanaconde, where you will have enough time to go for a short walk and explore the village. We will take the bus to Cruz del Condor (Condor Crossing) to see majestic condors flying through the canyon. At lunchtime we arrive at Chivay, where we will have lunch and then soak in the hot springs of "la Calera" (36 Celcius) . You will be bussed back to Arequipa where we plan to arrive by around 7pm.
