| ITINERARY |
DAY 01:
Early in the morning a representative of PIE PERU will collect you from your hotel and lead you to Ollantaytambo or Poroy´s train station where you will take the train to Aguas Calientes. The complete journey lasts about four hours and offers spectacular landscapes which combine the sierra and the forest. The train descends to 2100 meters, following the Urubamba river. This is one of the most spectacular settings in Peru. When you arrive in Aguas Calientes a representative of PIE PERU will wait for you and lead you to your hotel. For the rest of the day you are free to discover this beautiful village. In the afternoon or evening you can visit the hot springs, which are approximately 15 minutes from the village. Here you will find a thermal pool which has been attributed medicinal properties. Your overnight stay will be at our hand picked hotel in Aguas Calientes.
DAY 02:
To be able to appreciate the sight of the Machu Picchu ruins at dawn, it is necessary to leave at around 5:30 in the morning. By leaving that early you will avoid the herds, while taking advantage of a spectacular sunrise, framing the mountains and valleys beyond.
You will have to take the bus to the entrance but the journey only lasts around thirty minutes, zigzagging up the mountain path. At your destination our local guide will take you to the most important sectors of this iconic, man-made landmark.
Later you will have free time to visit the ruins on your own before taking the bus back after midday, accompanied by young kamikaze boys, who race the bus downhill and some how, invariably manage to beat the bus back to base, even in sandals. Lunch is in Aguas Calientes before catching the train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, a journey of around four hours back to Cusco. You should arrive in Cusco at around 9pm, where you will be transferred to your hotel.
